Dad's Simple Salmon

The benefits of salmon are undeniable. They are full of Omega-3 fats and neuron building DHA. Little ones with developing brains need this! It's a great low carb meal with enough quality protein and fat to support any health routine. It's good for you and you should be eating it regularly. This isn’t really debatable folks.

This blurb isn't meant to convince you to eat salmon...if you need that just run a google search. "The truth is out there" Fox Mulder

Don’t Complicate things - This is a rant of how I do salmon for my fam. I'm a busy Dad. I don’t have the time or money to make the most eloquent salmon fillet. I'm not going to smoke my own pole caught Sockeye over pine needles and season it with home grown rosemary...it's just not in the cards for me at this point. I just need to get it done. #Context

Simplify - I'm more about simplification and consistency. I need salmon to enter my kid’s mouth about two'ish times per week, every week. It has to be easy and it must be tasty, otherwise my boy won’t eat it. I also don’t like a messy kitchen. All that being said, this is what I do. So let’s get into it.

What matters?

Wild -The fish must be wild caught. I don’t care what type of Salmon so long as it’s wild. Sockeye, Alaskan, Coho...all good.

Farm raised salmon (aka Ratchet Salmon) is gross. The fish are fed things that fish shouldn't eat...corn, soy and even chicken. This makes the fish sick...so they add in anti-biotics to keep them alive. Those anti-biotics end up in you and they murder your vital gut bacteria.

If you need further convincing to eat wild just Google it. There are many reasons. Then have your brain checked...you may be low on DHA. But, this post is about simplicity. Moving on.

Purchasing:

Around 7 bucks a pound seems to be average.

I always ask the guy with the knife for the tails only. The tails are boneless. This is super convenient when eating. I originally started doing this for my son because he doesn’t know how to remove the bones but I'll probably ask for these forever.

Storage: Just don’t. Cook that bitch right away. Cook all of it and then reheat leftovers. Cooked Salmon lasts far longer than raw. #Simplicity

Cooking:

1. Oil a baking sheet with olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, macadamia nut oil or any other non-vegetable oil. No soy, no canola, no Pam, no rapeseed oil and no corn oil.

2. Pre-heat the oven to 350

3. Lay the tail fillets skin down, season them and bake for 13 minutes. That’s it.

Simplicity hack - Cover the baking sheet with tin foil and place salmon on top. When you’re done just crumple the foil up and throw away. Nothing to clean.

Seasoning: Any combination of the following: Salt, pepper, turmeric, thyme, garlic, cayenne and my favorite is Braggs sprinkle
